BOOKINGS
The lead time for each application for space varies from airline to airline. Many are unable to confirm carriage until approximately two weeks
before the projected departure date. As a general rule however, a minimum of 10 working days notice is required by airlines for international bookings, but the more complicated destinations (eg UK) require longer. GLOBALPETS does this booking for you. Domestic bookings require 72 hours lead time.
FIT TO TRAVEL
Each country of destination has different regulations, however the MINIMUM requirements for all animals being transported from New Zealand are:
Must be microchipped
Must be a minimum of 8 weeks old on AirNZ (for extended flights this age increases to 10 weeks) and 12 weeks on Qantas
Must undergo a veterinary inspection by a MPI approved veterinarian within 72 hours prior to departure
For flights over 6 hours duration an Animal Welfare Export Certificate must be obtained
Must have Customs export clearance
RABIES
New Zealand is one of the few countries in the world that has the happy distinction of being Rabies-free. As a result of that New Zealand dogs that fulfill residency requirements and are travelling to many other rabies-free countries are not required to be vaccinated. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE UNITED KINGDOM OR EUROPE. Please check this out with us as the rabies protocols can take a minimum of six months to be approved.
QUARANTINE
As a result of New Zealand's rabies-free status, formal quarantine is not required in most countries. However VERY STRICT pre-departure
health testing and/or vaccination protocols are still required for all countries. GLOBAL PETS will undertake these requirements for you.
TRANQUILISING FOR TRAVEL
We do not recommend tranquilising pets prior to travel and these days, nor do most airlines. The latest medical studies indicate that
tranquilising pets for flights causes more problems than it avoids.
We do however use the best pheramone sprays. These are homeopathic and do not sedate the animal, but rather just take the edge off any stress related behaviour.
IMPORT PERMITS
Some countries require an Import Permit for animals and often such permits must be applied for well in advance of the departure of your pet(s). Such a permit is also often required before a booking for travel can be made. Please contact us for information regarding whether such a permit is required at your destination.
MICROCHIPPING
It is now compulsory for all animals departing from New Zealand, to be microchipped. If your pet is not already microchipped, please
check this out with us. If required we are happy to arrange this.
AIRLINE RESTRICTIONS
Unlike many overseas countries, pets are not able to be carried either in the passenger compartment of aircraft, or as excess baggage on
international flights. All animals must travel in the cargo hold. This is why airlines must have prior knowledge of animals travelling as obviously the cargo hold has to be heated in the event of animals being carried and therefore precludes the carriage of many other types of cargo, such as perishable products.
Due to previously encountered problems, some airlines will not carry certain breeds (or part breeds) of dogs. For instance some airlines will
not carry Terrier breeds or Brachycephalic breeds(flat faced). Alternatively some airlines will carry these breeds, but require the owner to sign a waiver of responsibility in the very rare instance of death occurring in transit.
CANCELLED FLIGHTS:
On rare occasions your pet/s departure flight may be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances (such as mechanical delays or extreme weather
conditions). If this occurs GLOBAL PETS will board your pet in the same facilities as our own animals until such time as new travel arrangements can be made. You will be notified immediately of the situation and have the peace of mind that your loved pet will be taken care of just as well as one of our own. An additional charge may be incurred.
Should you cancel any relocation instructions after bookings and arrangements have been made, there will be a charge made by Global Pets.
